A bit about me.
An artist since I can remember,
I started building my metalsmith foundation in 1998.

I had been studying to be an art education teacher at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University when I found I needed 2 credits in a field of art I had not yet explored. My ceramics professor, Sister Dennis Frandrup, who was also the jewelry professor and an amazing artist all around, strongly encouraged me to take a 2 credit jewelry manufacturing class.

POOF! I was in love! I loved the processes involved, I loved the tools, I loved learning & honing the skills, I loved learning the why & how of metal properties and I loved adding my art and design to all of that. I quickly found the jewelry studio had a very strong gravitational pull on me.

I took a sharp turn from heading into education to pursuing this new found medium of silver and other precious metals. The door towards pursuing jewelry manufacturing and design seemed to open and with a full heart I skipped through. My tunnel was lit! Soon I was working for Mary Gohman of Silver Scarab, another amazing jewelry designer and artist who was on my dream path of creating in her home and showing and selling at Art Festivals. I took in, as much as time would allow, from Mary before deciding this indeed was what I wanted to do. I then attended the Jewelry Manufacture and Repair and the Gemology Programs at Minneapolis Community and Technological College to make this new dream path look official to all else! I have not looked back! I still love learning the processes, using the tools, honing the skills, learning the properties of the metals and adding my art & design to all of it!

I birthed three sweet little baby boys & slowed my career to be at home with them while they were young but I never stopped creating in my little moments. Now my boys are all in school, I have a bit more daylight hours and am always finding the balance of being present with them and maintaining my business. But my path is still lit and brighter than ever.

A few years ago a friend asked if I could donate a metalsmithing class to a silent auction. I replied, “No, I can’t offer a class, I don’t have enough tools for others to use." But then I thought, here is another door I could swing open, I had been pondering teaching metalsmithing for years. So I invested in eight sets of tools, wrote up a workshop description, offered it to the silent auction and 6 months later I was sharing my passion with a lovely group of people and it felt good for my soul and theirs! And so my education came full circle, I was teaching again. I have been sharing my passion, when I have the chance, ever since in the very intimate setting of my studio.

I hope you can come hammer with me; creating is so very good for our souls.
Sarah
